Hiccups that will not stop? Simple kitchen steps, and when to see a doctor

Almost everyone gets hiccups, and almost everyone's grandmother has a fix for them. Most hiccup spells fade on their own in a few minutes. When one does not, a few simple kitchen steps are worth trying before you worry.

Why hiccups happen

A hiccup is a sudden, involuntary squeeze of the diaphragm - the muscle under your lungs - followed by the vocal cords snapping shut, which makes the "hic" sound. Eating too fast, very spicy food, fizzy drinks, sudden excitement, or a big temperature change in food can all trigger it. The spell usually ends as quickly as it started.

What the Arogyanidhi suggests

The Arogyanidhi (vol. 1, hiccups section) lists traditional home preparations for stubborn hiccups. The gentle, food-grade ones:

Dry ginger (sonth) with jaggery. The book describes a small ball of about 2 grams each of dry ginger powder and jaggery, sucked slowly. Both are ordinary kitchen ingredients; the slow sucking also naturally steadies your breathing, which is what most hiccup fixes really rely on.

Mint leaves with lemon. For hiccups that keep returning, the book suggests sucking on mint leaves with lemon. Again, common ingredients, no strain on the body.

Simple habits that help alongside

Eat a little slower, and avoid gulping very hot or very cold drinks - sudden temperature swings in the food pipe are a known trigger. Slow, steady breathing for half a minute often settles the diaphragm on its own.

When hiccups need a doctor

Ordinary hiccups stop within minutes or hours. If hiccups keep going for more than a day or two, come with chest pain, breathing trouble, vomiting, or severe stomach pain, or follow a head injury, do not keep trying home steps - doctor se poochho. Persistent hiccups can occasionally signal something that needs treatment, and a doctor should check.

For the everyday kind, a calm minute and a simple kitchen ingredient are usually all it takes.
